Equivalent

To / Told (someone) to...

Grammar rules

  • Attached to a noun (a person) to show who was spoken to.
  • It's a very common, casual spoken way of indicating the receiver of an indirect quote.
  • Can be replaced with '더러' without changing the meaning.

의사 선생님이 아버지더러 담배를 끊으라고 하셨어요.

  • When '더러' is added to '나' (me) or '너' (you), it combines to become '날더러' or '널더러'.

누가 널더러 그 일을 하라고 했어?

  • '보고' and '더러' are interchangeable with '한테' and '에게'.

    선생님이 저한테 책을 읽으라고 하셨어요.

  • Cannot be used if you aren't quoting someone's speech.

요즘 수현 씨보고 무슨 일 있나요? (Incorrect) -> 요즘 수현 씨한테 무슨 일 있나요? (Correct)
