Grammar rules

  • Attach '을/를 위해(서)' directly to a noun.
  • Attach '기 위해(서)' directly to any verb stem.
  • The '서' can be omitted.
  • When modifying a noun, use '위한' (e.g., 건강을 위한 운동 - exercise for health).
  • It is much more formal than '-(으)려고' and is often used in public speeches, writing, or strong expressions of dedication. Unlike '-(으)려고', it CAN be used with imperative sentences.

건강을 위해서 담배를 끊으세요! (Quit smoking for the sake of your health!)
