중 / -는 중

Used to express that an action is currently in progress. It is similar to the present continuous '-ing' in English, emphasizing that you are right in the middle of doing something.

Summary

Equivalent

In the middle of / Currently doing

Also: -고 있다 (To be doing - progressive tense)

Example

I am in the middle of taking a phone call right now.

지금 전화를 받는 중이에요.

Grammar rules

  • Attach '중' directly to action nouns (e.g., 회의 중 = in a meeting).
  • Attach '는 중' to verb stems (e.g., 밥 먹는 중 = in the middle of eating).
  • Usually followed by '이다' (to be) or '에' (at/in).
  • Unlike '-고 있다', it cannot be used with adjectives or verbs expressing a state (like 입다, 알다). It must be an active process.

옷을 입는 중이에요 (O - putting it on right now). 예쁜 중이에요 (X)
